Tintern Abbey Cottage
The proud winner of the Best Self Catering Place to Stay in Wales 2010. In 2009 we bought the cottage and undertook a total renovation which conserved its 250 year old slate and stone heritage and created a "smart new house in a wonderful old body - and with a million dollar view".It was immediately awarded its five star status and then won the Best in Wales Award. Come see!

The cottage was totally renovated during 2009 from a wreck to a top of the range standard. It gained its five star award plus Walkers and Cyclists awards from the Visit Wales inspector on 19 November 2009. We have since gained the Croeso Cynnes Cymreig ( A Warm Welsh Welcome) award for our hospitality. Less than one year from receiving its first visitors Tintern Abbey Cottage won the highly prestigious Best Place to Stay in Wales Award given by Visit Wales ( our award was for a small self catering place as opposed to a self catering complex or an hotel which have their own awards). A Green Tourism Business award followed fast behind, also at Gold ( Highest) level.
Originating from the 18th century, Tintern Abbey Cottage is chocolate box cute and has been transformed into a smartly contemporary and deliciously comfortable holiday house in an ancient body. Right across the road from the mighty roofless Abbey, of which it has glorious panoramic views,(now there's a renovation project!) the photos above shows how amazingly close we are to it! The cottage directly adjoins the Wye Valley Walk, is in the heart of the ancient conservation area of Tintern and yes, there are several pubs a couple of small cafes and three hotels in easy strolling distance -all offering food and several featuring local produce. The village even has a prizewinning vineyard and a microbrewery both open to visitors! Also in the village are a craft centre and small shops. There's a bus stop at the bottom of our drive so you could walk along the wonderful Wye Valley or visit Chepstow Castle or Racecourse and get a bus back .
Importantly, we are walking distance of the Church ( the functioning one) and several hotels with wedding licences so ideal for the bridal party to stay or for guests.
It sleeps 6 and has three bedrooms with superking ( 6 feet wide) beds which can each become a pair of 3 ft twin beds on request. One of the bedrooms is spacious the others are standard size original cottage rooms and as in the 18thCentury beds were not 6 feet across, as ours are, there is less spare space in those two rooms.
Two bathrooms with both baths and showers ( lit mirors and shaving sockets, heated towel rails), a whirlpool in one of the bathrooms , a dinnerplate headed shower in the other, cosy woodburner, squishy leather suite, sheltered and fenced garden with furniture, private off road parking.
It has top of the range equipment from 5 flatsceen Tvs with freeview channels including radio, Ipod docks and and Wifi to a fully fitted kitchen with all mod cons (washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, freezer and a super range cooker with extractor hood) A very full inventory including many extras ,and modern basics like double glazing , excellent insulation, and a green central heating system go without saying. All in all it is well up to the highest 5 star standards- standards our many repeat guests at Foxes Reach and Vanilla have come to trust. If you would like to know more about anything specifically please ask us.
If you are interested in how this was acheived you can follow the progress of the building and renovating work by going to Tintern Abbey Cottage on the left hand side of this screen and then opening the gallery of pictures. In the gallery you can see the mess first getting worse as the entire building was gutted back to a skeletal form( most of what we had expensively bought was taken away by skip!) , and then the mess gradually improving as the work progresses and the new fitments arrive and exterior landscaping gets under way -and then you can see it in completed form room by room above.
